Aneurysm Treatment: Coiling vs. Clipping — Which Is Right?
By Anshika
Comparing the two main treatment approaches for brain aneurysms, their benefits, risks, and recovery processes.
When a brain aneurysm is discovered, patients and families face an important decision about treatment. The two main approaches are surgical clipping and endovascular coiling.
Surgical Clipping
A neurosurgeon performs a craniotomy to access the aneurysm and places a small metal clip across its neck.
**Advantages:** Definitive treatment with very low recurrence rates. Suitable for wide-necked aneurysms.
**Disadvantages:** Requires open brain surgery with longer recovery.
Endovascular Coiling
Tiny platinum coils are placed inside the aneurysm through catheters threaded from the groin artery.
**Advantages:** Minimally invasive — no craniotomy. Shorter hospital stay. Faster recovery.
**Disadvantages:** Higher risk of recurrence requiring follow-up.
Decision Factors
The choice depends on aneurysm location, size, shape, whether ruptured or unruptured, patient age and health, and center expertise.
